Korčula Wines: Tasting the Tradition and Quality of Korčula Island
Unlike most of Dalmatia, which is proud of its red wines, Korčula offers interesting white wines from indigenous grape varieties, while red wines, such as Plavac Mali, are also highly esteemed.
Pošip, an indigenous variety of Korčula, is one of the first Croatian wines legally protected. With its golden-yellow color, rich and distinctive taste, and moderate acidity, it pairs perfectly with fish and white meat dishes.
Rukatac, also known as Maraština, stands out with its light yellow color and harmonious flavor, best enjoyed with seafood and roasted dishes.
Grk, a white wine from Lumbarda, is known for its light greenish color and pronounced varietal aroma. With its rich, harmonious, and slightly bitter finish, it pairs well with seafood and white meat.
Plavac Mali, the island's most famous red wine, is grown on the southern slopes of Korčula and in Lumbarda. This dark red wine with purple reflections has an opulent bouquet and rounded flavor that pairs excellently with dark meat, game, blue fish, and fine cheeses.
These wines not only reflect the island’s richness but also contribute to its esteemed reputation among wine lovers worldwide.
