Korčula Festivals and Events – Experience Local Traditions

Korčula Festivals and Events – Experience Local Traditions

Korčula is an island full of life, rhythm, and tradition – a place where centuries-old stories and customs come to life through numerous festivals and events that attract visitors throughout the year.

Each event carries a part of the local identity, offering visitors the opportunity to feel the pulse of the island, take part in its traditions, and enjoy its vibrant energy.

Moreška – The Sword Dance

The most famous event is Moreška, a dramatic sword dance symbolizing the battle between the "white" and "black" king for the girl Bula. Deeply rooted in Korčula’s history and culture, it is traditionally performed on St. Theodore’s Day, the island's patron, and has become a regular part of the summer cultural calendar. Moreška is not just a dance – it is a living story that fascinates tourists and locals alike, with costumes, weapons, and rhythms echoing through the old town streets.

Kumpanija and Village Festivals

Korčula is also home to various Kumpanija – ceremonial sword dances performed in local parishes during village festivals in Žrnovo, Pupnat, Čara, and Smokvica. The streets come alive with the sound of drums, rustling costumes, and local energy, creating an authentic experience connecting past and present.

Summer Festivals and Cultural Programs

The summer brings musical evenings, local product fairs, and wine festivals. Traditional dishes and indigenous varieties like Grk and Pošip often take center stage. Visitors can participate in workshops, games, and tastings. Classical music lovers enjoy the Korkyra Baroque Festival, while the Knight Games Festival and Korčula Wine Festival allow guests to experience history and tradition.

Religious Processions and Festivities

Religious processions and celebrations take place throughout the year, such as All Saints, St. Roch, and St. Michael’s Day. Especially impressive is the Easter Week procession and St. Theodore’s Day parade, bringing centuries-old tradition to life through the old town streets.

A Full Sensory Experience

Participating in Korčula’s festivals is more than observing – it is a full sensory experience. The sound of swords, music, aromas of local specialties, tastes of wine, and the energy of the people create a memory that lasts. These festivals unite the community, preserve tradition, and pass stories from generation to generation.
