Korčula Wines: Tastes of Tradition and Quality from the Island of Korčula
Korčula is renowned not only for its rich cultural heritage but also for its exceptional wines, which boast a long and esteemed tradition. The island, known as Korkyra Melaina in ancient Greece and Corcyra Nigra during the Roman era due to its lush vegetation, is celebrated for its fine wines. Unlike much of Dalmatia, which is famed for its red wines, Korčula is distinguished by its intriguing white wines made from indigenous grape varieties, while its red wines, like Plavac Mali, are also highly valued.
Pošip, an indigenous variety of Korčula, is one of Croatia’s first legally protected wines. It features a golden-yellow color and a rich, distinctive flavor with moderate acidity, making it an excellent match for fish and white meat. Rukatac, also known as Maraština, is characterized by its light yellow hue and balanced taste, ideal for pairing with seafood and roasted dishes. Grk, a white wine from Lumbarda, is noted for its light greenish-yellow color and pronounced varietal aroma. Its rich, well-rounded flavor with a slightly bitter finish pairs beautifully with seafood and white meats.
Plavac Mali, the island’s most famous red wine, is cultivated on the southern slopes of Korčula and in Lumbarda. This dark red wine with purple reflections has a luxurious bouquet and a rounded flavor, making it a perfect accompaniment to dark meats, game, blue fish, and strong cheeses.
These wines not only reflect the island’s rich viticultural heritage but also contribute to its esteemed reputation among wine connoisseurs around the world.
